Surf Boats
Piha has a long, proud history of Surf Boats.
From its initial development as a rescue boat, to the more modern use as a surf sports event, Piha has never been far from the action.
With equal measures of talent, strength, bravery and sheer bloody-mindedness it takes a special group of people to be Piha Boaties. Witness the lengths these crews go to as they face enormous surf head on and attack it with vigour.
The Boaties have long been a favourite with the viewers of Piha Rescue where the thrills and spills of the annual Piha Big Wave Classic are captured to great effect. Held in late February the Big Wave Classic has become a fixture on the NZ Boatie calendar and is the jewel in the crown of the Trillian Trust Surf Boat Series.
There is barely a more exhilarating sight than the nose of a Piha boat, with the logos of key sponsors and supporters Burger Fuel and Trillian Trust, punching through the surf on its way out to the cans.
