Senior Surf Sports Update 2020/21 #2

Hi All,
It is that time again for another big update- Apologies that the first one didn’t make it online!
Most of the changes from NZ and Northern Region surf have been confirmed so we can start getting on with our season.
  • Admin
    • Prizegivings
      • A lot of people still do not know that Club prizegiving is happening on the 4th of July- add it to your calendar!
      • Senior Surf Squad Prizegiving will be happening at 3pm on the same day. The 4th of July. We will meet before club prize giving to cover off Sports awards from last season and have a little debrief while also getting into some of the info for the coming season. It would be really great to have as many people there as possible so bring the family along.
    • Fees
      • All athletes need to have their previous season’s fees covered off asap!
    • Adopt a lifeguard
      • This is an awesome program that Nicky and Ron and the sports committee have put together and you guys should be making the most of it. For those that do not know, get in contact and we will send you a copy of last years description. Essentially, it is a sponsorship to help cover fees/entries/accom/gear for the season. All you have to do is get out and do some door-knocking around some local businesses. It could be a good idea to hit up some local real estate agents from Barfoot and Thompson (One of our senior squad sponsors).
    • Gear
      • A number of people put their hands up for their gear to be repaired but it never made it onto the trailer last weekend- So I took up those that were organised and had either sorted a way of getting it on or put their own gear on. If you know this wasn’t you then you will need to sort out your own gear getting fixed.
      • Gear allocations and 50/50 schemes– anyone that is not new to Piha or a 1st year U16 (or as of this year U15) will need to look into either gear allocation for the season, the 50/50 scheme or purchasing their own gear. The club gear that is not allocated is reserved for the first-year athletes. This is just a reminder to keep an eye out for second-hand deals or new gear deals. We do not have enough gear to go around everyone- especially paddles. You should either own your own paddle or sign up for the 50/50 scheme. A paddle that is the right size for you will make so much difference!! The earlier we get onto this the more likely you are to have the gear for the majority of the season (due to order delays).
    • Calendar
      • There will be a Senior Squad Calendar that you can download and make your own- It has on it all the confirmed events and camps for the season. Make sure you know what is coming up during your season. – For a copy, please email coach@pihaslsc.com
  • Training
    • Schedule
      • TRAINING SESSIONS START AT 4:30 pm – NOT ARRIVE AT 4:30 PM- we do not have the daylight hours to be arriving late and messing around!! GRRRR
      • We will carry on with the current training schedule of Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat until the end of June.
      • As of July 6th, we will add in Monday sessions at 430pm at Takapuna.
      • Running sessions are still optional until July. Once we get into the July program we will be running at least twice a week after the Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sat sessions. You MUST bring running shoes for every session.
      • You MUST bring your High vis to every session- NO vest NO session.
    • Pool Sessions
      • We currently only have the Wednesday night sessions available for pool training, if you are planning on racing at pool Nats you need to make sure you are coming along to these.
      • We are chasing 50m pool lane bookings at the moment but I will keep you updated on those.
    • Heart rate Monitors
      • If you (or someone you know) has access to Heart rate monitors could you please get in touch. I would like everyone to get familiar with heart rates and how to check them, how to use them as a training tool, and how to monitor them.
    • Training Diaries
      • You should all be keeping a training diary to monitor how often you are training, how hard the sessions are, what you ate and how you were feeling. All this information give us the ability to tailor your training schedule to you so that you are getting the most out of each session and to prevent overtraining.

  • Winter Camps
    • This season we will do a couple of weekend camps out at Piha
      • They will consist of an overnight on the Saturday with training sessions, whiteboard sessions and team-building exercises.
      • To make these happen I need Parental help and a Chaperone- If this might be something that you can help with please get in touch.
      • The dates and times will be 11th-12th July and 15th-16th August– The camps will start mid-morning on Saturday and finish Sunday lunchtime.
      • I will keep you posted with more updates, but without the Parental help, we cannot make this happen.
  • Summer Camp
    • Whiritoa camp
      • Our Summer camp is locked in again this year at Whiritoa SLSC.
      • Again this cannot go ahead without parental help and this one is a big one.
      • The dates are booked for the night of the 6th of Dec (straight after the Whanga Classic) through to the 11th (before the Mount Monster).
      • Please let me know if this is something you might be able to help with.
Kind Regards
Bjorn Battaerd
