OUR CORE ROLE IS LIFESAVING
Piha Surf Life Saving Club is proud of its lifeguarding services. Our beach is dangerous and must be respected, and with many tourists and visitors each summer we work hundreds of hours keeping everyone safe. We are a volunteer service reliant on grants, sponsors and donations and if you can assist us we’d love to hear from you.
HOW YOU CAN STAY SAFE
SURF SAFETY TIPS
ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED & YELLOW FLAGS
Between the red & yellow flags is the area we patrol most, and where you will be safe. We are always watching this area, so always make sure you swim there and stay inside the two flags.
IF YOU GET IN TROUBLE RAISE ONE HAND STRAIGHT ABOVE YOUR HEAD, AND TRY NOT TO PANIC.
One hand raised above your head is the signal that you are in trouble and we will respond as quickly as possible. Try to stay calm.
TAKE EXTREME CARE WHEN FISHING FROM ROCKS.
When fishing from rocks always wear a life jacket, and don’t go alone. Don’t stand near the waters wedge as waves can be unpredictable and yo may get washed into the sea.
IF YOU ARE CAUGHT IN A RIP.
Try swimming parallel with the shore to escape the rip, then swim ashore. Don’t try and swim against the rip current as yo will tire quickly. Raise your hand directly above your head and stay calm.
