WELCOME TO PIHA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC.

Piha Surf Life Saving Club is one of New Zealand’s best. We patrol to the highest standard to keep you safe at one of New Zealand’s busiest, and most unique beaches. Proudly celebrating 80 years of lifeguarding.

OUR PEOPLE

Piha’s lifeguards are a mixture of youth and experience, from 7 years to 70 years, and beyond. There are experienced lifeguards who have been there for decades, and a great Junior section.

OUR BOATIES

Piha Boaties (our surfboat crews) are on top both nationally and internationally. We are leaders in promoting surfboat racing throughout NZ and are recognised far and wide.

OUR SPORTS TEAMS

Piha Surf Life Saving Club’s competition teams are going from strength to strength under the guidance of coach Bjorn Battaerd.

OUR RESCUES

Our lifeguards are amongst NZ’s finest, and we pride ourselves on the hundreds of preventative actions we take to alleviate rescues to keep you safe. You can help by always swimming between the flags.

OUR TRADITION

Piha celebrates 80 years of life guarding this year. A fantastic achievement, with the traditions of old still apparent amongst the ‘clubbies’.

OUR NIPPERS

Piha has a fabulous Junior Surf section (‘Nippers’) with many strong family connections stretching through the generations. A fun environment for children, whilst learning about surf safety at an early age.

OUR SURF PATROLS

Our lifeguards are amongst NZ’s finest, and we enjoy an enviable reputation for our high standards. When you swim you must swim between the flags, and lifeguards will ensure your safety.

OUR UNIQUE PLACE

Located on Auckland’s rugged West Coast, Piha is full of stunning scenery and has a unique character renowned worldwide. Piha has one of New Zealand’s best known surf breaks.

OUR LIFE GUARDS ARE SPECIAL

OUR CORE ROLE IS LIFESAVING

HOW YOU CAN STAY SAFE
SURF SAFETY TIPS

ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED & YELLOW FLAGS

Between the red & yellow flags is the area we patrol most, and where you will be safe. We are always watching this area, so always make sure you swim there and stay inside the two flags.

IF YOU GET IN TROUBLE RAISE ONE HAND STRAIGHT ABOVE YOUR HEAD, AND TRY NOT TO PANIC.

One hand raised above your head is the signal that you are in trouble and we will respond as quickly as possible. Try to stay calm.

TAKE EXTREME CARE WHEN FISHING FROM ROCKS.

When fishing from rocks always wear a life jacket, and don’t go alone. Don’t stand near the waters wedge as waves can be unpredictable and yo may get washed into the sea.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT IN A RIP.

Try swimming parallel with the shore to escape the rip, then swim ashore. Don’t try and swim against the rip current as yo will tire quickly. Raise your hand directly above your head and stay calm.
