Piha Surf Life Saving Club enjoys possibly the highest profile in the country – not only due to the top rating television programme but also as one of the busiest patrolled beaches in the country. We have a proud history as a patrolling club and it is a set requirement that every member perform patrol duties before they can compete in interclub Surf Sports.
Our next generation of beach guardians is being trained in our club Nippers programme. We are proud to have a thriving Junior Surf section, with the season just gone seeing a record number of new members. We envisage this season’s junior membership will continue to increase and with this rapid growth comes a demand for the club to keep pace and deliver quality programmes and resources.
Piha has junior members becoming involved from age 5 (as Tadpoles) and we have a programme that develops them from that young entry age through to 14 years when they move on to qualify as lifeguards. This unbroken chain of development is a unique feature of Surf Life Saving.
Elsewhere, under the expert tuition provided by a paid Head Coach, Piha has been the quiet achiever in Surf Sports competition with a growing programme and ever improving athletes. The focus for the immediate future is to now take these competitors the next step and see Piha stamp a real authority on carnival results.
We also have one of the finest club facilities in the country – though with the location on the wild West Coast, it demands extensive attention to facility maintenance and ongoing improvements.
Our vision is for our network of members, partners, sponsors and supporters to be a highly sought after circle to be associated with.
Piha’s lifeguards are a mixture of youth and experience with some lifeguards patrolling the iron sands of Piha Beach for decades.
Piha Boaties (our surfboat crews) are on top both nationally and internationally. We are leaders in promoting surfboat racing throughout NZ and are recognised far and wide.
Piha Surf Life Saving Club’s junior and senior competition teams are going from strength to strength under the guidance of coach Conor Bradding. The depth of knowledge retained by longterm members contributes massively to successes on the beach.
Our lifeguards are amongst NZ’s finest, and we pride ourselves on the hundreds of preventative actions we take to alleviate rescues to keep you safe. You can help by always swimming between the flags.
Piha SLSC was established in 1934 and celebrates a rich history of lifeguarding with numerous groundbreaking initiaives being born on the iron sands in front of Lion Rock.
Piha has a fabulous Junior Surf section (‘Nippers’) with many strong family connections stretching through the generations. A fun environment for children, whilst learning about surf safety at an early age.
Our lifeguards are amongst NZ’s finest, and we enjoy an enviable reputation for our high standards. When you swim you must swim between the flags, and lifeguards will ensure your safety.
Located on Auckland’s rugged West Coast, Piha is full of stunning scenery and has a unique character renowned worldwide. Piha has one of New Zealand’s best known surf breaks.
